Capitol Art Show - Takes place during Youth Art Month on Saturday, February 22, 2003, through Saturday, March 29, in Topeka, Kansas. On display throughout the Capitol rotunda will be artwork by K-12 students across Kansas. Accepted will be one artwork per art educator. For more information, call 913.281.1133.

 

The Art of Learning Follow-up - Saturday, February 8, 2003, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. As requested by participants following the June 2002 program, trainers will meet with them again in Wichita to share successes, challenges, and plan new direction. Exploration in Art - A series of one-hour workshops (10:30-11:30 am) at Dreams Work with adults who have disabilities. Participants will explore a variety of tactile and visual art forms. February 7 & 21, March 10 & 24, April 7 & 21. For more information, call 913.281.1133.

The Awards ceremony will take place approximately 2:25 - 3:30 pm Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in the main dining room of the Kansas State School for the Blind during the meeting of the Kansas State Board of Education. (See map of the campus on our main web page.) We thank all the people who sent in such wonderful nominations. Please remember to consider these awards during 2003, and turn your nominations in by the next deadline, December 31, 2003. Presentations - The Collaborative: Presentations about 99 Drums and The Art of Learning at West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St. Kansas City, Kansas. This meeting from 9:00 - 11:00 am on March 4 will be attended by adults who work with youth and is open to the public.

Wyandotte Lions Club: 6:15 pm presentation at Presbyterian Manor in Kansas City, Kansas on March 4 to give an update about AAI programming. For more information, call 913.281.1133.

 

Art Reach - at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, 4420 Warwick Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri. This Sunday afternoon series from 2:00 - 3:30 pm will include:
'Photo Collage Workshop for Children' February 23 (based on Robin Bernat's work), and 'Mixed Media Workshop' March 30, 2003 (based on sculptures by Sharon Louden). Accessible Arts will provide assistance for this a collaborative program by the Kemper Museum and KU Medical Center Institute for Child Development. The workshops are free, but reservations must be made in advance by calling Kristy Peterson at 816/753-5789.

Garden City - Exploring Art for SW Advocacy Coalition (SWAT), sponsored by Families Together, March 17 at 6:30 pm. We will do a variety of theatre, music activities and a simple visual arts project. 6:30 pm at Families Together facilities. The preregistration fee is $75. Contact Tammy Schwindt at 620/276-6364.

Arts Integration in the Core Curriculum-with Adaptations for Children with Disabilities. This teacher training workshop is currently planned for March 17 from 4:00-5:15. For more information, call 913.281.1133.

Jellybean Student Workshops will be presented on 'Disability Awareness through Music and Movement'. Three workshops will be presented March 17, 11:00 am - 3:15 pm and two workshops on April 18, 11:00 am - 1:45 pm, at the Charles O. Stone Intermediate Center, 401 N. Jennie Barker Rd. Presenters will be Barry Bernstein and Martin English.

Heart of America Wind Symphony Concert - April 13, 2003, 7:00 pm
The wind symphony presents their April concert which for the third year benefits Accessible Arts, Inc. The theme will be Journey to Middle Earth: Lord of the Rings. Three breaks during the concert will feature dance performances by Reach and City-in-Motion's Children's Dance Theatre. There will also be an exhibit of art by artists with disabilities and a visit from an unexpected guest from the past. Tickets may be purchased through Johnson County Community College for $5 (children and seniors) and $10 (adults).

99 Drums - April 25-27, 2003, Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. A weekend of hands-on music and dance workshops exploring the arts, history, customs, and food of Hmong, West African, Native American, Mexican, and Caribbean cultures. For children ages 7-16 of all abilities and disabilities. The cost is $35, and a few scholarships are available. Refer, also, to 2001 information under What We Do (Past Programming) and under Archives - Spring and Fall 2001 Newsletters. A free public performance culminates the program 3:30 - 5:30 pm on Sunday.
