    Facilitator Bios
    Kit Bardwell: Program Director, Accessible Arts, Inc.
    Kit Bardwell is presently the Program Director at Accessible Arts, Inc., a non -profit organization dedicated to championing the arts for children with disabilities. She holds degrees in music from the North Carolina School of the Arts and the University of Missouri – Kansas City. She was the founder and Artistic Director of The Pocket Theatre, a touring company that offered participatory theatre for children. Over the past twenty years, Kit’s experiences have also included working as a Program Specialist for Kansas City Young Audiences, General Manager for Paul Mesner Puppets and as a freelance performer, director, and playwright. Her experience in working with individuals with disabilities includes teaching music at the North Carolina School for the Deaf and working as a Program Coordinator for Triality, a provider of day habilitation for adults with developmental disabilities.
    Connie Burket: Director, Kansas Alliance for Arts Education (KAAE)
    As Director of KAAE, Connie Burket is charged with uniting individuals and organizations across the state to advance understanding of art, music, dance, and drama as essential components of education at every age and stage of life. Working in cooperation with the Kansas Arts Commission, the State Department of Education, and other professional organizations, KAAE provides a broad range of services to help schools and communities across Kansas build and strengthen their arts education programs. Connie's responsibilities include the design and facilitation of professional development workshops; collaborative planning and development of standards-based arts programs, projects, and assessments; maintenance of a database of artists who can provide educational programming; and constructive advocacy development.
    Martin English: Executive Director, Accessible Arts, Inc.
    Martin has served as the Executive Director for Accessible Arts since March of 2000. He directs all arts programming, facilitates advocacy efforts, oversees all aspects of fiscal management and supervises Accessible Arts staff and consultants. From 1997 to 2000, Martin served as the Executive Director for FilmFest Kansas City and the KAN Film Festival. His experience includes managing not-for-profit organizations, fund raising, grant writing and promoting the arts. With an MFA in Acting/Directing from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, he has extensive experience in theatre including the creation and performance of many workshops in Kansas and Missouri schools. Martin has maintained a long-term relationship with Young Audiences and Arts Partners of Kansas City to ensure artist residencies in the schools. Martin has also directed and produced several training video projects for corporate and non-profit clients.
    Dr. Dee Hansen: Associate Professor of Music Education at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.
    Dee was the Fine Arts Consultant for the Kansas State Department of Education from 1994-2002. She is also an educational consultant for the Kansas Arts Commission guiding program assessment for arts education programs and a music consultant for The Wolf Trap Foundation’s stART smART program in Washington, D.C. She is currently the President of the Kansas Music Educators Association. Additionally she chairs the Kansas Citizens for the Arts, a state-wide grass-roots arts advocacy organization. MENC published her book, The Handbook for Music Supervisors, in 2001. The Music and Literacy Connection in April, 2004 which she recently co-authored, has brought clarity to the links between text reading skills and music learning, as music educators advocate for strong music programs in schools.
    Joyce Huser: Fine Arts Education Consultant for the Kansas State Department of Education
    As a member of the School Improvement and Accreditation Team of the Kansas State Department of Education, Joyce Huser serves as a District Support team member, along with nine other state department personnel. Through this team, she works with Kansas schools that have difficulty making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). As the Fine Arts Education Consultant for the State Department, Joyce provides statewide and national in-services to diverse groups. These workshops and seminars address strategies and ideas to enhance student learning in the core curriculum including fine art instruction. Topics include cross-curicular alignment, interdisciplinary instruction, and arts integrated curriculum preparation. She addresses collaborative planning and instruction-and brain-compatible, conceptually based curriculum while maintaining arts-based learning goals.
    Michael Vance Toombs: Founder and CEO of Storytellers Inc.
    Michael is an accomplished painter and art activist. He is a community leader and champion for young people and working artists in the Greater Kansas City area. Michael began as a young student with Matthew Monks at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. He furthered his study through classes at the Kansas City Art Institute and completed a business entrepreneurial course of study through Donnelly College, Kansas City, Kansas. Michael left the corporate world as customer service manager for GHA Insurance to develop his own business in the belief that "Art is a Change Agent for society’s difficulties." Michael’s current art form is "interactive community based art." Examples of his diverse community engagement: Bartle Convention Center Mural; Urban Literacy Conference, University of Missouri, Kansas City; Art and the Entrepreneur Forum, Wichita State University, and many others.
